HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is a group of more than 200 related viruses, some of which can cause genital warts and certain cancers, including cervical, anal, and throat cancer. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) worldwide, affecting both men and women. Most people with HPV do not experience symptoms, and the infection often clears up on its own. However, some types of HPV can lead to serious health problems, such as cervical cancer in women. Regular screenings and vaccination can help prevent the spread of HPV and reduce the risk of developing HPV-related cancers.
At Ronen OB/GYN, we offer HPV screenings and vaccinations as part of comprehensive women’s health care. Our team educates patients about the risks of HPV and provides resources for prevention and early detection.
HPV is primarily transmitted through direct skin-to-skin contact, most commonly during vaginal, anal, or oral sex with an infected person. It can also spread through genital contact even without penetration, and rarely, it can be transmitted from mother to baby during childbirth.
It’s important to note that HPV can be passed even when an infected person shows no visible symptoms. This makes it easy for the virus to spread unknowingly.
At Ronen OB/GYN, we provide thorough education on preventing HPV transmission, emphasizing safe sexual practices and the benefits of the HPV vaccine. Our team helps you understand your risks and works with you to implement strategies to protect your health.
HPV testing is typically done as part of a routine Pap smear during a pelvic exam. For women aged 30 and older, an HPV test can be performed alongside a Pap test to check for high-risk strains of HPV that may cause cervical cancer. The test involves collecting cells from the cervix to be examined in a lab for the presence of HPV DNA.
For women under 30, HPV testing is not routinely recommended, as the immune system often clears the virus within a few years. If abnormal cells are detected on a Pap smear, an HPV test may be ordered to assess the risk of cervical cancer.
At Ronen OB/GYN, we ensure that you are properly screened and monitored for HPV. Our providers can explain the process and help you understand the results of your HPV test.
HPV testing is primarily recommended for women aged 30 and older as part of routine cervical cancer screening. The American Cancer Society suggests that women begin regular Pap tests at age 21 and continue every three years. Once a woman reaches age 30, a combined Pap test and HPV test is recommended every five years or a Pap test alone every three years. This is because certain high-risk strains of HPV can cause cervical cancer, and screening helps detect any abnormalities early, allowing for timely intervention.
For women under 30, routine HPV testing is not typically recommended unless there are abnormal Pap smear results. In younger women, the immune system often clears the virus within a few years, reducing the need for testing. However, if abnormal cervical cells or signs of high-risk HPV are detected, additional HPV testing may be necessary to assess the risk of cervical cancer.
HPV testing is also recommended for women who have had abnormal Pap test results or those with a history of cervical dysplasia or other risk factors for cervical cancer. At Ronen OB/GYN, we provide guidance on when and why HPV testing is important for your health. Our team helps ensure you receive the appropriate screenings based on your age, health history, and risk factors.
The HPV vaccine is most effective when given before any exposure to the virus, which is why it is recommended for both boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 12. The vaccine can be given as early as age 9. It’s also recommended for individuals up to age 26 who have not previously been vaccinated.
In some cases, adults aged 27 to 45 who have not been vaccinated may benefit from the HPV vaccine, but the decision to vaccinate should be made in consultation with our healthcare provider.
At Ronen OB/GYN, we encourage vaccination as a key preventive measure against HPV and the cancers associated with it. We provide guidance on vaccination schedules and offer the vaccine to eligible patients to help protect their long-term health.
While the HPV vaccine provides excellent protection against the most common and high-risk strains of HPV, it does not protect against all types of the virus. The vaccine currently available targets the HPV strains responsible for about 70% of cervical cancers and the majority of genital warts. It is most effective at preventing HPV infections before exposure.
According to Dr. Pinky Ronen, OB/GYN, the vaccine does not protect against every strain of HPV, but it significantly reduces the risk of developing HPV-related cancers and genital warts.
At Ronen OB/GYN, we emphasize the importance of the HPV vaccine in preventing cancer-causing strains of HPV. Our team can help you understand the vaccine’s benefits and ensure you are protected against the most common high-risk strains. For more information, contact us or schedule an appointment online.
